SPARKS『Propaganda』対訳

スパークス通算4枚目1974/11/11リリースのアルバム『Propaganda』。

ブレイクを果たした1974/5/1リリースの前作『Kimono my house』から、わずか半年後のリリース。レーベル、プロデューサーもそのままで、続編色が強い。

ただ、売れてモテ始めたせいなのか(？)、歌詞内容の童貞(amateur hour)感は少し薄れ、女性と付き合えるところまでは達することは多いものの、相変わらず心が浮ついたり、逆に見切りをつけられ、浮気され、破局を迎え、女に翻弄されたりしている。

また、子供(を持つこと)に関する曲、植民地/奴隷制度を揶揄する曲があるのもこの時期の特色だ。

才能が花開き、ノリに乗っている時期の半年後のリリース。アイディアが溢れ、バンドとしても勢いがあり、すぐに次の一枚が仕上げられたのだろう。間違いなく名盤(というよりスパークスは名盤だらけ)ではあるが、やはり前作からの続編であり、このままこの状態が続くわけにはいかない、ということも感じられるアルバムでもある(というか、どの時代でもそうだろうが、特にこの時代前後は、トレンドのドラスティックな移り変わりに対応して生き残るのが大変な時代である。例えばKissのドキュメンタリーなどが参考になる。Amazonプライムでみれる)。

そして、現状に飽き足らず、次作でより前進するために、プロデューサーにトニー・ヴィスコンティを向かい入れ、傑作を作り上げたというのに、当時は全く受け入れられなかったというのは、彼らが50年経った現在でも現役で新譜をリリースし続けている、という野心の高さを象徴していると感じる。

SPARKS歌詞対訳方針

SPARKS

最近、若干ですが、アクセスが増えてきたようで、検索サイトからスパークスの翻訳に辿りつく方が多いようです。

アルバムリリースと来日が重なってるからかもしれないですね。

スパークスの魅力はサウンドだけでなく歌詞につまっていると常々感じてます。

2年前の来日ライブの時はまだファン歴も浅く、歌詞が分からない状態で行っても楽しみは半減されるな、と判断し、スキップしてしまいましたが…、今回は行きます！(サイン会も行きました！うれしい！)

昨日、ライブ前ということで映画「スパークスブラザーズ」を見直しまして、やはり、素晴らしい！

訳の観点では、映画内の部分的な歌詞の訳は、ちょっと違うのでは？と感じつつも、(抜粋され、部分が切り取られた上での訳なので仕方ないような気もします)、気づきもありまして、私が初めに訳したアルバムタイトルは「Big Beat」で、1曲目の曲名の「Big Boy」ではない、ということに気がつきました…。これは凡ミスレベルではあると思うものの、何回もアルバムを聞いてスマホの画面に表示されてても気付かなかったわけですから、思い込みというのは恐ろしい…

なので他にもこういう思い込み、または、単純に英語力、読解力不足などで間違ってるケースがあるのではないかと、翻訳済みの歌詞を再度精査しています。

それで割と出来てるのではないか？という曲がある一方、まだ微妙な所が残ってる曲もあると感じ(特にアルバム後半になるほど顕著…)、今後修正することがあれば可能な限り履歴に残したいと思います。(めんどくさくなって、しれっと直さないようにしたい←実は今までも何度かしているのですが…、段々とブラッシュアップさせているということでもあります)

・ファン歴

2022年12月末に、エドガー・ライトファンとしてAmazonプライムで映画スパークスブラザーズを見てから。その前に、カラックスファンとしてアネットを劇場で観ていたのですが、その時は残念ながらハマらず…。

・スパークスの知識

歌詞を読むことを優先し、正直な所、映画以上のバンドやアルバムの情報収集はあまりしてません。各アルバムの音と言葉だけを真剣に聞くことがよほど理解が深まると思っています。

・過去作品の対訳の確認

ここがポイントかもしれませんが日本版アルバムの所有は新譜のMADだけです！過去作はCDもレコードも高く、それなら自分で訳してしまおう、となりました。「hospitality on parade」の曲名を「栄光のパレード」、と訳してる辺り、訳も怪しいのではないか？と勘ぐったりしてます(もし歌詞中身が正確に訳されてたらすみません。ただ、違うアルバムですが、Whomp that sucker=弱い者いじめ　は最高ですね。)

それに、私自身意固地になって対訳確認を拒んでいるとは思いますが、英語の壁と同時に、歌詞の謎解きの壁。これを自分で読み解けた時の嬉しさがすごいわけです。

それでもうっかり、(そんなに多くはないようですが)、インターネット上でファンの方の訳をいくつか読んでしまうこともありましたが、正直あまりあまりピンとこない…、というのが多いです

この記事を読むまで歌詞の意味が理解できてなかったので、解釈含めて勉強になりました。ただ結構意訳されてる所があり、私の方はもう少し直訳ベースかと思います。

半年ほど前に見つけたので、訳としては参考にはしてません(というかこの曲は、ドキュメンタリーを見てからアルバムを聞き始めて、自分で訳したい！ときっかけになった曲です。すごい歌詞)。他のスパークスの曲も何曲かあり(私が未訳なのは断固としてスキップしましたが)、解釈も素晴らしく、ニコニコ動画、2chのアスキーアートのオタク感性と、スパークスのオタク感性が、実は親和性が高すぎることに気づかせてもらいました。

・英語スキル:昨年末でTOEIC790点。仕事上英語で会話する機会あり。ネイティブの友人→疎遠…。私より英語ができる方には優しく見守っていただきたく…

・訳し方

分からなかったらまず和英(ロングマンのアプリ)か英英をひきます。

それでも足りない場合は、単語、熟語単位で、ググったりして用例を確認していきます。調べていく上で、そんな言葉使いはスパークスのこの曲の歌詞にしか存在しない、と、用例にも引っ掛からず、スパークス特有の変則的言葉遊びをしていることが分かってくることもあります。その時はその変形される前の原型を解読するのが重要になってくるケースがあるように感じます。

AI翻訳→ウィットな表現含めて全然訳せてないと思っていて、使ってませんでしたし、単語レベルから精査していく方が学びは確実に多いので使ってませんでした。が、どうも最近精度が良くなっできたと感じ、なかなか分からない表現が出てきた時に、直近のKimono my houseから使い始めました。それでもやっぱり、単語、熟語、文法、そして文脈…、それらが読み解けた上で参考にしなければなりません。というか、ここ1、2ヶ月の間で、ググると最初にAIのまとめが出てくるようになり、その影響も大きい…

しかしAIがスパークスの歌詞の意味を全てを解読し訳せる未来は来るのでしょうか？(来てほしくないですね)

・気をつけている点

意訳しすぎない。原文のニュアンスを大事にしたい。その言語の感覚で理解出来た方が良い。英語のギャグは英語のまま理解したい。場合によっては意訳するケースもあり。同じ節が繰り返される時は、1.既訳のため省略する(英語の

まま理解出来るようにする) 2.繰り返しの効果が強く、省略しないケースがあり、それは訳者の独断によるもの。

•今後

プロパガンダの数曲の難易度が高く、そこから放置されています…。他のアルバムに取り掛かかるかもしれませんが、忙しさとその時の興味次第です…。

スパークス通算3枚目1974年のアルバム『Kimono My House』。テレビ出演によって全英の茶の間を騒がせ、ブレイクを果たしたアルバムであり、今でもスパークスを代表するアルバムの1枚だ。下積み時代といえる前2作はまだ未確認だが、次作以降(7枚確認済)のアルバムと同様、この時点で非モテ自虐ソングぶりは完成されている。しかし、これ以降のアルバムと比べると、本作はより若さと野心と諦念がみなぎっていて、より暗号じみている曲が多いように感じる。ただ、繰り返していくうちに、意味不明に通り過ぎていく歌詞にこそ、何かが込められていることに気がついていく。

マーク・ボランみたいなやつが歌い、ちょび髭のヒトラー(チャップリン)みたいなやつが鍵盤、というビジュアル面、楽曲、歌詞、それら全てが絡み合ったインパクトとミステリアスさからのブレイク。そこから歌詞だけ切り取ってみても、こんなソングライティングがほかにあるだろうか？悲痛で、それなのに面白い歌詞しかない。サウンドにのると、それがさらに増強され、そして、音と歌詞から映像が映画のシーンのように浮かび上がってくる。

肝心な1、あとは4、5、9曲目で分からない箇所があり放置していたが、久々に読み返すと解読できたため今回の投稿となった(5曲目はネットにある他の方の訳で理解できた)。ロン・メイルの頭の中を覗いている感覚で、大分、(変遷もあるだろうが)彼の思考回路が分かってきた気がする。しかし、次作『Propaganda』も訳すのが難しい曲があり、次々作『Indiscreet』以降の方がより洗練されていて、比較的訳しやすいように感じる。それは、本作のヒット以降、ほぼ1年毎に1枚アルバムを作り、売れるための試行錯誤を続け、ポップソングを作ることへの意識が高くなったからなのかもしれない。

空音央『HAPPYEND』

近未来の地下クラブへの潜入から警察から逃走するまでの疾走感。そこで突然タイトルバックになり、数秒間画面が止まってから、再度駆け抜け始める大胆さ。映画開始早々から目も耳も釘付けになってしまう。

また、クラブでのDJプレイの高揚と、それと同時に主人公が音楽へ没頭する姿から、監督が音楽に対して本気であることも瞬時に感じ取れる。

初見の監督の作品だが、序盤からこんなに未知の期待を感じさせる映画もそうそうない。

音楽への夢を持ち合わせた2人の主人公の男子高校生とその友人たち。メインの5人の国籍は4つにまたがり、全員が日本で生まれ育っている(女子は中国系の1人のみ)。

より保守性が高まっている近未来の世界で、彼らは、出自に伴った悩みだったり、それに限らず個人的だったり、青年期の悩みを持ち合わせたりしている。

そんな彼らの、演技をしているということを超えた自然な親密さにも驚く。5人とも演技経験がなかったとのことだが、カメラがまわっている/いないに関わらず、いつも仲睦まじいのだろう、と感じてしまうほど作為さを感じない。

そこでは、これは映画である、といったり、これはドキュメントである、といった対比が無意味になり、彼らは本当にこの世界で実在している、と思ってしまうほどだ。

特にそれは、彼らから少し距離を置いたカメラからのショットが多用されていることによるものが大きいのかもしれない。カメラが俳優たちの目の前近くから離れていることで、彼らのカメラへの意識が薄まると同時に、その反対に、共演の仲間との距離感が浮き立ってくる、といえるだろうか。

このため、この映画のトーンは彼らの心的状態のトーンと連動することが多いようにも感じる。

彼らが楽しんでいたり、反抗していたりと衝動性が高い時はショットもノリに乗っている。校長が「テロ」と称した、しかし、まだ何も壊されてはいない、あの静的な、(まだどう判断すればよいかわからないという面でも、文字通りの意味でも)、宙に浮いているような、あの出来事も、内的衝動によるものだといえ、この映画の驚くシーンのひとつだ。

反対に、彼らが悩み、行き詰まっている時、それはそのまま映画のトーンにも反映されがちだ。それもまた、無理に劇的にしていないという面では自然体だとも言える。しかし、こういった場面では、「こう撮る」といった意思が、他の場面よりも弱めに感じる。(念のためだが、ここで私はショットはいつもキマッて欲しいと言いたいわけではない)。

このように、衝動性と行き詰まりのそれぞれの描写で対照的な面があると同時に、この両面は常に対比できるわけでもない。衝動的に行動したがゆえに行き詰まることもあるからだ。

特に、青年たちが思いつくまま行動に移したストライキ活動の顛末がそこに対応する。そしてここでは、校長と学生の間の抗争だけではなく、演出と演技と脚本の間で、どのような場面にしたいのか？、というせめぎ合いが生じているように感じる。

この青春映画では、権力側(校長)と抑圧(生徒)される側の対立が描かれているが、校長の佐野史郎に対しては、そんなに悪者ではないかもしれない、と感じさせる余地も残されているように感じる。特に佐野史郎本人の演技からそう感じるし、監督としても完全な悪者に仕立てようとはしていないようではある。

こういった演技、演出面では安易な二項対立は避けられている。しかし脚本としては、結局、選択肢が差し出された上で、片方が選ばれる展開が作られている。

様々なせめぎ合いの中でそのような結末を迎える時、それに対して外部の者がいだく意見は割れる。いいかえれば、この場面は、鑑賞者の鏡として機能している。

私がどう感じたかというと、学生の無計画な実行が結局それほど本気ではなかったことも、校長の見せかけの譲歩も含めて、全てがグダグダ、である。特に、仲間からの差し入れを受け入れる、ということは弱さを露呈してしまうことにならないのか。

ただ、大人数の青年たち全員に本気を求めるのも、厳しい状況で意思を団結させるのも、現実としては難しいだろう。と考えると、彼女の涙はそれを甘んじて受け入れざるを得ないことで流れたように感じる。

先に、このシーンには校長と学生、演出と演技と脚本のせめぎ合いがある、と指摘したが、このようにそのせめぎ合いは仲間同士内にもあるといえる。そして、外部の意見が割れる、というのは、映画を観た人々の間にもそれらの様々なせめぎ合いが伝播している、ということだ。

そして、それは、まさに今の時代のあらゆる場所(特にインターネットを通じて)で日常的に起きている事と通じている。

ただ、行動することに対して、他人(友人)との食い違いに悩むことも、内的に葛藤することも、その上で思いきって行動に移すことも、結果がどうあれ大事なことだ。若い時ならなおさら。

そして、身近な友人と自分が根本的に食い違っているように感じた時でも、相手を受け入れようとすること。全然わからなかったり、嫌だなと思ったり、色んなことが無理だと諦めたくなっても、ユーモアと同時にそこだけは失わない姿がまぶしく映されていた。

フレデリック・ワイズマン『Menus-Plaisirs - Les Troisgros (邦題: 至福のレストラン／三つ星トロワグロ)』

フランスの片田舎の三つ星レストランの仕事をめぐる4時間の体験コースのような映画。

レストラン内の料理人、ホール担当(ギャルソン)、ソムリエはもちろん、仕入れ先の市場、農家、牧場、など、そこに関わる様々な人々の仕事がとらえられている。

料理のために色とりどりの食材が用いられながら、その作業をじっとみつめたり、仕事の説明を聞き、飽きることなくその体験は終わった。

いや正直に言えば、チーズ工場内の人の解説は少し長くて退屈し、そこだけ10分位うとうとしまったが、レストラン内やその周りの鮮やかな自然、農場のシーンは終始目をひかれた。*1

そしてこれも長時間の中の曖昧な記憶になってしまったが、どこかで誰かが「料理は言語だ」みたいなことをいっていたような気がする。

もちろん人間の行動には基本、言葉は伴うものだ。

仕事をする時は、1人の時でも頭の中で使うのはもちろん、特に複数人で仕事をする時は言葉で相手に伝えることが重要になってくる。

ここでいう仕事とは、単純に、何かを作ること、といいかえていい。

何かを作るのは、それを作りたいからで、出来上がる前に作りたいもののイメージがある。

ただ、イメージ、とはなんなのだろうか。

どこまでイメージしているのか？イメージできているのか？

具体的なイメージがまだない状態で、手探りでイメージをかためていくこともある。

そして、現実に何かを作るときは、必ず何か素材を用いる。素材から、どのように作るかイメージをしていく。

そのようにして、人と共に何かを作る時、どのように対象を言葉で捉え、それをどのような言葉の表現で相手に伝えていくのか。

そのようなことは作業として、当然誰もが行うことだ。

ただ、私自身、料理というのは言葉以前の感覚で作り上げられていく傾向が大きいと思っていた。(ちなみに、私はというと料理は家でたまに1人で作るくらいである)

それは音楽に少し似ているのではないかと(もちろんかなり異なる面もあるが)。

しかし、この映画を通して強烈に感じたのは、誰かが言ったように、かなり「料理は言語」であるように扱われていることだ。

料理を作り上げていく上で、「言葉」は欠かすことの出来ない調理器具のように働いているようだった。

よりよいものを作るための素材の選択、それらを組み合わせて調理をし、料理にしていくときのイメージの強度、そして、それを言葉にして相手に伝えていく姿。

それについて特に考えさせられたシーンは、序盤の会議室でのシェフ2人のミーティングだ。

若い方の男が魚のメインディシュの内容を説明している。

それに対してもう1人の年上の男が、アーモンドのスライスをいれるか、またはピューレにするか、など、ソースや付け合わせの案をいくつも挙げていく。

または、別の魚はどうか、それは今旬ではなかったり、今なかなか入手できない、など2人で試行錯誤していく。

若い男は言われた内容をメモしているようだが、もう1人の男は話すだけだ。

しかし、彼は頭の中で調理し、味付けをし、味の微調整を厳密にイメージしているように見える。

そのような言葉の強度が感じられるのだ。

そしてその後、この机上のイメージをもとにした議論、味の微調整は、実際に厨房での試食の場でも行われる。

そして、ここで驚くのは、厨房での試行錯誤が、会議室での言葉だけの試行錯誤と全く同じように行われている事だ。

彼の頭の中には厨房があり、そこで彼は料理をしている。そして更に、それを言葉で他人に説明することもできる、といえばいいだろうか。

それは目の前に素材や器具や実際の料理があるかに関わらないのだ。

机上が全く空論になっていないようだともいえる。

それを可能にしているのは料理という作業の特色にもあるかもしれない。

少なくとも音楽ではかなり難しいことだと思う。それは音楽批評の困難性などにも繋がっていくが、ここでは関係ないのでそんなことは置いておく。

自分が何を作るにしろ、なんの仕事をしているかにしても、その時にどのように言葉が使えるのか？

そのことについて考えるきっかけがこの映画にはあった。

そして、職人の技術が言葉で裏打ちされていることが感じられ、その言葉は人が料理を通して喜ぶために捧げられており、それが、仕事仲間や家族の間、そして、シェフ(レストラン)とお客の間の親密さに現れていることに心打たれている。

*1:ところで、どんな作品でも、この辺で寝てしまった！　とレビューで書くことも実は大事なことではないか。暗闇では眠たくなるもの。恥ずかしがらなくて大丈夫！

SPARKS『Terminal Jive』対訳

SPARKS

スパークス通算9枚目、1980年のアルバム『Terminal Jive』。前作『No.1 in Heaven』のヒットに引き続き、ジョルジオ・モロダー(イタリア人)のプロデュースが続く予定だったが、多忙のため大半の曲がハロルド・フォルターメイヤー(ドイツ人。映画『トップガン』のサントラなど)プロデュースに引き継がれたとのこと。前作がシンセ主体のテクノポップだったのに対して、このアルバムでのシンセの立ち位置は鍵盤(シンセサイザー)としてのバンドアンサンブルの一部となっている。ギターも入っておりサウンド面含めてニューウェーブ色が強い。

新しく加わったシンセはバンド編成の一部とも言えると同時に、音色はバンドサウンドに、打ち込みの自動化はビート感に大きく影響を与えることになる。

Wikipedia、というよりその元の音楽レビュー？に、ギターが主体になった、とあるが、音を聞くとそこまででもないだろう。ニューウェーブ的なギターもあるが、多くの伴奏や印象的なリフ、メロディがシンセで演奏されている。

打ち込み主体でアルバムを作り続けるのはまだ機材やプロデューサーに頼らなければいけない時期で、演奏形態としてはドラム、ベースも加わったバンド形態に戻ることとなった。というより、その形態こそがまさにニューウェーブのバンドが登場してきた時代だったといえる。

とはいえ、彼ら的には元ロックバンドがディスコをやってる、という自意識なようで、それはそのまま3曲目の歌詞に自虐的にあらわれている。

一曲目の「When I'm with You」はフランスで6週連続チャート1位になるほど、スパークスのキャリアの中でもかなり売れた曲とのこと。シンプルなラブソングかつ、適度にロマンチックでユーモラス、さらに、サビで「曲の途中だけど」と、いきなりメタな視点を持ち出してくるのもいかにもスパークスらしい。

SPARKS 『No. 1 in Heaven』対訳

スパークス通算8枚目のアルバム『No. 1 in Heaven』。

ロックバンドが突如としてテクノポップデュオに転向したアルバムは「天国で1番」と宣言するにも相応しい、スパークスのキャリアの中でも屈指のアルバムとなった。

プロデューサーはディスコ音楽の祖、ジョルジオ・モロダー。リリースは1979/3/1。まだテクノポップ黎明期だ。ちなみにYMOの1stアルバムは1978/10/25リリースで一足早い。さらにその数年前からはクラフトワークなどが活動しているが、同時期のテクノポップの作品を色々とききくらべてみるのも楽しいだろう。個人的にYMOと似た同時代の雰囲気をまとってるように感じて直接比較してみたのだが、音楽性は全然違っていた。ただ、高橋幸宏よろしくリズムに関してはまだ生ドラムも多用されている。

ロックバンドから転向したことの自意識は、例えば、3曲目「甘い生活」のアイロニカルな歌詞から感じることもできる。それにしても、当時としては大きな転向だっただろうが、テクノロジーの進化によって、ドラム、ベースを必要とする従来のバンド形態から解放されたスパークスは、本来、兄弟2人が礎となるユニットなのだ(とはいえ2人だけのユニット形態が活動を続ける上で理想的かというと、そう単純な話でもない)。彼らは奇しくも打ち込み主体の現在の商業音楽の形態を先取りしてしまった。

この転向は、歌と鍵盤のデュオだからこそ可能だったといえる。ロン・メイルがもしギタリストだったらこのような転向は難しかったに違いない(というより音楽性すら変わってくるだろう。ピアノのクラシカルな素養がもたらす音楽性、というのはスパークスに限らずあるし、スパークスの楽曲が本国よりもヨーロッパでヒットすることが多いことからも、この事を推し量ることができる)。やはりギタリストの存在はバンド色を強くする。そもそも、ロン・メイル兄の佇まいには鍵盤が似合いすぎているのだ。

1曲目は、スパークスらしい相変わらずの性ネタ、ともいえるが、下ネタを超えて、生命の神秘、生存競争の儚さ、まで感じさせる歌詞は崇高さすらある。

その他の曲も含めて相変わらずのウィットがありつつも、アルバム全体を通して感じられるこの格調高さはなんなのだろう。サウンドと歌詞両方に。このアルバムからは、当時の音楽の未知の領域に踏み込むんでいく興奮と、もう絶対に失敗できない、という覚悟が強く感じられる。「天国で1番」というタイトルなんて、よほどじゃないとつけられないと思うけど、これだったらつけちゃっていいじゃん？と思えるほどの楽曲たちが完成してしまったのだ。
