Sparks通算7枚目、1977年のアルバム『Introducing Sparks』。普通はデビューアルバムにつけるタイトル(『Introducing Kenny Burrell』 『Introducing Wayne Shorter』など、特にジャズアーティストのデビュー盤としては枚挙にいとまがない。ポップス系でもある？)を6枚目に持ってきたのはほぼギャグだろうが、心機一転の気持ちも少なからずあったのだろう。凝りに凝ったものの鳴かず飛ばずだった前々作『Indiscreet』、シンプル目にパンクっぽさも出した前作『Big Boy』も売れなかったらしく、本アルバムではサウンド的に模索中、迷走中な感じが出てしまっているのは否めない。1977年の音楽のトレンドがどんなものだったかについては私は当時まだ生まれていなく、この時代のポップソングに詳しくないので何とも言えないが、確かに当時よりも若干ひと昔のサウンドの傾向がある気はする。当時は今よりもテクノロジーの進化、音楽のトレンドの変化がダイナミックで、時代についていくことは大変だったはずだ。そして、このアルバムがあったからこそ、次作『No.1 in heaven』で大きく振り切れることができたと言える。サウンド的には当時のトレンドから外れているのかもしれないものの、グッドチューンだらけ。そして歌詞については相変わらず１曲も手抜かりがなく、全部面白い。エンディングの『Those mysteries』のピュアな歌詞は、スパークスの楽曲の中でも異例なのかもしれないが、この子供の純粋な好奇心と喪失の悲しみが大人のスパークスにつながっていく感じもする。『スパークス・ブラザーズ』でレッチリのフリーが「このアルバムはファッキン傑作だぜ」的なことをいっていて、とても好感がもてた。
